3D printing has caught the world by storm to the extent that it is suggested that the second industrial revolution is underway. 3D printing or Additive Manufacturing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. It is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes and is unlike traditional techniques, which mostly rely on the removal or subtractive processes of material.

While 3D printing technology has been around since the 1980’s, it was not until the early 2010’s that the printers became widely available commercially. Since then, there has been a large growth in the sales of these systems and their price has dropped substantially. According to Wohlers Associates, the market for 3D printers and services was worth $2.2 billion worldwide in 2012, up 29% from 2011. McKinsey lists 3D printing as one of the 12 technologies that could drive truly massive economic transformation and disruption in the coming years. 3D printing technology is used for both prototyping and distributed manufacturing with applications in architecture, construction, industrial design, automotive, motorsport, aerospace, military, engineering, dental and medical industries, biotech (human tissue replacement), fashion, footwear, jewellery, eyewear, education, geographic information systems, food, and many other fields.

IMI’s 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing & Digital Fabrication Course provides an introduction to 3D printing, additive manufacturing and digital fabrication. It reviews all of the recognized techniques used and captures the types of materials that can be used or developed. It provides attendees an understanding and an ability to recognize what is possible in the near term and where the limits of the technologies currently are and to appreciate the breakthroughs that may be necessary to bring about future predictions. In particular, the course will reveal the advances being made with ink jet and fluid developments.

COURSE LEADERS

Dr. Alan L. Hudd, Director and Founder, Alchemie Technology, Cambridge, UK

Dr. Hudd is Director and Founder of Alchemie Technology Ltd. Alchemie is an independent contract development and consultancy company to the industrial ink jet industry. A particular research interest is the development of 3D printing of both liquid and powder based jet systems and how ink jet can play a role in providing sustainable energy solutions. Alchemie is currently developing Jetronica, a novel ink jet printhead technology for coatings, adhesives, textile and additive manufacturing applications requiring high volume with consistent coverage. Jetronica FabriCoater technology provides a unique platform for delivery of ‘materials patterning’ at production line speeds. The technology delivers much larger drops at a higher rate than any existing ink jet technology making it suitable for printing a variety of structural features.

Dr Alan Hudd, Alchemie Technology
During this time Dr. Hudd led a number of important projects to jet materials to create 3D printing structures. Dr. Hudd is credited with being one of the pioneers to successfully ink jet print UV curable materials. In one case, high aspect ratio UV curable printing was achieved to create fine 3D tooling for the use of injection moulding. A number of other projects followed that have sown the seeds for many of the current UV cure 3D applications.

In 1987, Dr.Hudd joined Domino Printing Sciences and spent eight years as the Fluids Technology Manager, developing a wide range of ink jet ink for diverse applications and is credited with a number of patents and significant innovations within the industrial ink jet industry. Prior to Domino, he spent almost eight years with the Ministry of Defence and Royal Ordnance in the UK, developing new solid polymer rocket propellants for air to air missiles.

Dr. Hudd graduated with B.Sc. Honours degree in Chemistry and Physics, M.Sc and Ph.D research degrees in Polymer Chemistry from Manchester University.

the Saguaro Scottsdale & Scottsdale, Arizona Location

Acquired in early 2011 by The Sydell Group, the Saguaro Scottsdale has been fully renovated into a contextual resort, celebrating its convenient location in the center of Scottsdale adjacent to Old Town Scottsdale's central shopping & arts district and Civic Center Mall. Architects Peter Stamber and Paul Aferiat (known for their bold use of color) recreated the Saguaro around a palette of 12 vibrant tones found in native desert wildflowers in addition to better connecting the hotel to the public plaza next door.

The brilliant colors now adorn each balcony and patio and anchor the guestrooms, while also enlivening the indoor and outdoor public spaces. The color set follows the light spectrum, which in turn creates different perspectives of the hotel according to the time of day.

Saguaro Scottsdale

The Sydell Group wanted the hotel to reflect the friendly hospitality for which Scottsdale is famous and accordingly tapped Joie de Vivre Hospitality of San Francisco, known for their super friendly and all welcoming hotels to oversee the property's operations. Sydell and Joie de Vivre oversaw all aspects of The Saguaro's physical renovation, including a transformed lobby, rooms (now featuring hand-crafted furniture imported from Mexico) and two heated pool areas. New lighting and carpeting for the indoor and outdoor corridors were installed, as were extensive landscaping and garden elements.

the Saguaro Scottsdale is the official spring training hotel for the San Francisco Giants and is located less than ½ mile from Scottsdale Stadium.
